Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT)
Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT) is an attachment-based therapy that focuses on the negative, rigid interaction patterns of couples. This approach explores how these interactions are absorbed by each partner and the negative affect that typify distress in couple relationships specifically in terms of emotional disconnection and insecure attachment. Change in EFT is presumed to occur, not from insight, catharsis, or improved skills per se, but from the formulation and sharing of emotional experiences on the part of each partner to the other. EFT believes that this can transform the nature of the relationship, particularly as it pertains to past and current attachment needs and emotions. The EFT goal is to help the couple create a more secure attachment bond within their relationship.
