Melissa Henry MA, LPC
Professional Disclosure Statement
I work with individuals who are healing from domestic violence, trauma, anxiety and mood disorders, divorce, marital, family or relationship problems, or those struggling with low self-esteem, anger management, and career path decisions.
Professional Standards: I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. I adhere to the AACC Code of Ethics. You can expect that I will provide compassionate, empathetic, and sensitive counseling that is specific to your life experience and current needs. I counsel from a Biblical Worldview and have been a Christian since a young child. I am deeply honored to share in the healing journey with you and inherently believe that within a safe and unbiased counseling setting, healing, newness of life, and breakthrough are indeed possible.
Education and Experience: I received my Master of Arts in Community Counseling from Regent University in 2005 and my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish in 1998 from Hollins University. My clinical experience includes counseling individuals within such settings as private practice, domestic violence shelters, and a local corporation providing in-house employee counseling. I am a Military Spouse with a blended family, and bilingual in English/Spanish. I am Trauma-informed and clinically trained in “EMDR” Level 1 and 2, EMI, CBT, Basic DBT skills, and Basic Sozo.
Therapeutic Orientation: My therapeutic style is Integrative, meaning that I include the most useful modality to meet your individual counseling needs. I incorporate aspects of CBT, DBT, EMDR, EMI, Inner Healing Prayer (Sozo Model) and enjoy using tenets from solution-focused therapy when we set goals. I can tell you more about each of these approaches upon request. I also may use manualized treatments and bibliotherapy, assigning a book to read or workbooks to work through as part of our approach.
I counsel mostly from within a Client-Centered Approach and a CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) emphasis. CBT focuses on how our core beliefs produce our thoughts, which affect our emotions, and ultimately shape our behavior. I believe that the spiritual component of an individual is just as important as the mental and physical. Thus stating the important connection between the spirit, soul, and body of each individual. I welcome clients to explore areas that enhance spiritual growth and inner healing.
I respect the beliefs of all of my clients but openly disclose that I counsel from within a Biblical worldview and therefore the direction I give will oftentimes be influenced by my Christian beliefs. If you are unsure if this will be a good fit for you, or if you have any other specific questions before we begin our work together, I’m happy to answer those and welcome all questions. Finding the right counselor is indeed extremely important. Simply contact our office and let us know that you’d like to talk with me about this before we get started. I sincerely look forward to meeting you and joining you on the journey to greater healing. My heart is to help you to live life to the fullest with the ability to pass onto the next generation a legacy of health and wholeness.
