What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that emphasizes the development of skills in mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT integrates individual therapy with group skills training, focusing on helping individuals manage intense emotions and improve relationships. The therapy promotes a balance between acceptance and change, encouraging clients to accept their experiences while working towards meaningful change in their behaviors and thoughts.

Distress Tolerance

Geared toward increasing a person’s tolerance of negative emotion, rather than trying to escape from it.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Consists of techniques that allow a person to communicate with others in a way that is assertive, maintains self-respect, and strengthens relationships.

Emotional Regulation
